Hello Google, I Am Dark Skinned, Not A Gorilla: Google Photo App Tags Black People As Gorillas

Black taged as gorrilla

really don’t know what to say about this, probably leave the job to you all and just tell you the gist.

The new Google photo app has been doing quite well on the play store and one good thing about the app is its amazing search algorithm that has the ability to tag an item in the picture, this can be really helpful when you are searching for a specific picture in your picture folder, for example, when you type graduation you get to see all the graduation pictures you have. Let’s say you type in Gorillas, what pictures fall under this category?

You might find it very insulting that the Google photo app tags black people as gorillas, this was brought to the attention of the media when a certain Jacky Alcine shared his tag results via Twitter where the Google photo apps tagged his dark skinned girlfriend as a Gorilla

In my opinion, this is definitely one of the most embarrassing bugs by Google.

The chief social architect at Google quickly issued an apology for the mistake. Mr Zunger said Google had already taken steps to avoid others experiencing a similar mistake. He added it was “also working on longer-term fixes around both linguistics and image recognition itself”

Don’t you think they should make a public apology specifically to the dark skinned people of the world?
