New Army Chief-I will not tolerate indiscipline...

The Chief of Army Staff Maj. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai  on reacting to questions from journalists in Damaturu as to whether the over 4,000 soldiers that were sacked by the Army during the Boko Haram fight would be recalled responded that; “I don’t know how they would become a problem to us concerning your questions. But what I would tell you is that I cannot tolerate indiscipline in the force,” Buratai replied.

The Chief of Army Staff explained that his coming to Damaturu to celebrate Sallah with the troops is part of the measures to boost the morale of the troops on ground and help him access the equipment and the discipline of the soldiers so as to come up with a better approach to the counter insurgency fight.

He said: “I cannot tell you why I am here on the strategic level because it’s a strategic decision. We all know the importance of Damaturu and Yobe State in particular. My presence here is to improve civil military relation, we need the cooperation. My presence will boost the morale of the troops. This is one of the reasons why I am here. To see to myself and it will also help me to access the state of readiness in terms of equipment and indeed their state of discipline and we would be able to access the threat properly from this perspective,” Maj. Gen. Buratai.

Background & education
General Buratai is from Buratai town, Biu Local Government Area of Borno State. He had his primary education at Buratai town and thereafter gained admission to Government Teachers College Potiskum, Yobe State, where he graduated with distinction. He later attended the Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna as a member of the 29 Regular Combatant Course (29 RC) in January 1981. On successful completion of his Officer Cadet training, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 17th December 1983 into the Infantry Corps of the Nigerian Army.[1]

Career
Buratai was a Platoon Commander at 26 Amphibious Battalion Elele, Port Harcourt, from January 1984 to September 1986. He was a Military Observer at the United Nations Verification Mission II in Angola from October to August 1987. He later served as Platoon Commander at 26 Guards Battalion from September to November 1987 and thereafter Company Second in Command (Coy 2ic) in the same unit from September 1991 to August 1994. He was also a Platoon Commander at the Lagos Garrison Command Camp from August 1994 to April 1995.

Major General Buratai served as Staff Officer to the Principal Staff Officer to the then Head of State General Sani Abacha from April 1995 July 1998 before his appointment as Officer Commanding (OC) at 82 Motorized Battalion from July 1998 to July 1999. He was Second in Command to the Commanding Officer of 81 Battalion from August 2000 to April 2000. He served as General Staff Officer Grade 1 in Charge of Training and Operations (GSO1 Trg/Ops) at the Army Headquarters Garrison from February 2001 to July 2001. He was on the Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, (AFCSC) from August 2001 to March 2004 where he was awarded the prestigious “Pass Staff College Dagger” (psc(+)) appellation.[1]

Subsequently, Gen Buratai served as Colonel Plans at the Army Headquarters Department of Army Policy of Plans from March 2004 to December 2007 and then Assistant Chief of Staff in charge of Administrative Matters (ACOS G1) at the Headquarters Infantry Corps Centre from February 2009 to December 2009 before his promotion to the rank of Brigadier General. He was again at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College where he served as Director of the Department of Land Warfare from December 2009 to January 2011 before his appointment as Commander 2 Brigade Nigerian Army where he served from January 2011 to January 2013. While at 2 Brigade Nigerian Army Port Hacourt, he was also the Commander, Sector 2 of Operation Pulo Shield Joint Task Force. On his promotion to the rank of Major General, he was appointed Commandant, Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI), Jaji where he served from January 2013 to February 2014. In February 2014, he was appointed Director of Procurement at the Defence Headquarters and was appointed Force Commander of the newly reconstituted Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) based in N'Djamena - Chad from May 2014 to July 2015.[2]

He was appointed Chief of Army Staff on July 13, 2015 by President Muhammadu Buhari.[3]
